Rituals

In the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, there are a number of ‘rituals’, more commonly called ‘ordinances’. These ordinances include baptism, taking the sacrament, and attending the temple.

Baptism

When people have faith in Jesus Christ and have repented of their sins, they are invited to be baptized for the remission of sins.  During His mortal ministry, Jesus taught that baptism is an essential ordinance.  Consider the following discussion from John 3:

3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born.

5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

When people are baptized by someone with authority, they become members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Sacrament

Each Sunday, members of the Mormon Church attend “sacrament meeting,” which is the main weekly worship service.  During this service, bread and water are blessed and passed to the congregation.

Jesus Christ instituted the sacrament at the Last Supper as recorded in Luke 22:

And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

Mormons take the sacrament each week to remember our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and His sacrifice.

Temple Ordinances

In addition to chapels where weekly meetings are held, Mormons also construct temples throughout the world as buildings of worship.  In these temples, Mormons can be married for time and all eternity to their spouses.  Mormons also make covenants with God to obey His commandments in a ceremony known as the endowment.
